A Peek into your Family’s Future
In my last blog post, most of us self-diagnosed ourselves with Parental Nearsightedness, the inability to “see” beyond ourselves and our children. We discussed that the first ‘P’ in the prescription for Parental Nearsightedness was to “Peek” into your grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s futures.
What if I told you that you could remember your future family today? That’s right—remember your future family. Before you go thinking I am a bit crazy, let me explain.
I was first introduced to the concept of ‘remembering your future’ from my coach, Kary Oberbrunner, at the Igniting Souls Conference last October. He taught us that not only can we remember the past, but we can also remember our future!
Oberbrunner explains that not only do our memories work backwards, today’s science shows us that the same brain areas used in remembering our past are also activated when we imagine our future. Want to know more, click here. Still a bit skeptical, here is the article from Psychology Today.
Now that we know that we can remember our future, let’s take a peek into the legacy we want to instill in the lives of our grandkids, great grandkids, and beyond!
In their new bestselling book, Living Forward, Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy write:
Our legacy comprises the spiritual, intellectual, relational, vocational, and social capital we pass on. It’s the sum total of the beliefs you embrace, the values you live by, the love you express, and the service you render to others. It’s the you-shaped stamp you leave when you go.
Let’s unpack this legacy definition a bit and begin to ‘Peek’ into our family’s future:
Picture your future family as regular church attenders, family dinners at the table preceded by prayer, daily devotions, daily Bible reading, daily prayer and thanksgiving.
‘Remember your future’ family reading at least one non-fiction book per month, imagine your son or daughter reading to your grandchild on a daily basis, encouraging academics as a foundation to all extra-curricular activities, and modeling this behavior to your family.
Peek into your family’s friendships and reputation within their communities and ‘see’ strong character, integrity, and values run through the generations.
Your family will be passionate about and will be fulfilled by their careers, living out God’s purpose for their lives. Whether it be as an employee or employer, your family and their spouses will strive to serve God in the work they do and manage money the way God intended.
A look forward into your future family will reveal a culmination of the values and beliefs you and your spouse instill today!
Are you beginning to remember your future? Can you see beyond your own life and into the future of your kids, your grandkids, and beyond?
This might help. Not only is science revealing our ability to remember our own futures, Proverbs 13:22 shares this insight as well: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”
In “The Legacy Journey,” Dave Ramsey writes, “Just breathe into that for a second. Imagine your family—your kids, your grandkids, and maybe even your future great-grandkids—taken care of for generations to come…this is about changing your family tree.”
My prayer for you is that the words of this blog inspire you to take action to ‘remember the future’ of your family.
I will leave you with Proverbs 29:18: “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (KJV).
